Short vowels: Fathah, Kasrah, Dammah

In this lesson, you will begin learning the three short vowels in Arabic, known as Harakat. These vowel marks are essential because they determine how each Arabic letter is pronounced. By adding a short vowel to a letter, you can read simple Arabic syllables and take your first steps toward reading Quranic words.

The three short vowels are:

  • Fathah (ـَ) – produces a short “a” sound, as in cat.
  • Kasrah (ـِ) – produces a short “i” sound, as in sit.
  • Dammah (ـُ) – produces a short “u” sound, as in put.

During this lesson, you will practice reading every Arabic letter with each of the three short vowels, allowing you to combine letters and vowels confidently. Mastering these vowel sounds is a key milestone in learning to read the Quran accurately.
